Recently, the expert team of China Center for Disease Control and Prevention released an 8-year research result, which verified the high correlation between water pollution and gastrointestinal cancer. Eight year investigation reveals the truth of high incidence of cancer

As early as 2004, the problem of water pollution in the Huaihe River Basin attracted the attention of the whole society. The painful pictures of local cancer patients deeply hurt Yang Gonghuan, who was then deputy director of China Center for Disease Control and prevention, resolutely accepted this arduous research task.

Since 2005, Yang Gonghuan and his research team have visited the polluted areas. What shocked them is not only the barren land and the stinking sewage, but also the ignorance and neglect of the local government on the cause of death. Yang Gonghuan recalled that although the cancer mortality rate was very high, it was not reflected in the statistics of the local public security organs. The death rate of the population in the high incidence area of cancer is only 3 ‰ ~ 4 ‰, far lower than the national average of about 6 ‰. "There is no local investigation into the specific causes of the high mortality rate."

In order to more intuitively understand the results of this study, Yang Gonghuan compared the "water pollution frequency map from 1997 to 2009" with the "change amplitude map of standardized mortality rate of liver cancer from 1973 to 2006" in the Huaihe River region, and finally found that the mortality rate of liver cancer increased rapidly in the areas with the heaviest pollution and the longest pollution time, namely the tributaries of Fenhe River, Quanhe River, Shaying River, Wohe River, Kuihe River and the Nansihu Lake Basin The incidence of gastric cancer and esophageal cancer is basically consistent with that of liver cancer.

According to the monitoring data, the main pollution indicators of Huaihe River Basin are ammonia nitrogen / non-ionic ammonia, five-day biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, etc. The pollution mainly comes from the discharge of "three wastes" (waste water, waste gas and solid waste) brought by enterprise production. The most serious period of water pollution is 1996-1997, 2001-2002 and 2004-2005.
